Over the summer, I have had the privilege of working as a college intern at the Ellicott City Summer Band Camp. The camp is mostly made up of younger, elementary or middle school students working on their fundamentals, however there is also a huge group of high school counselors that help teach the students. The percussion counselors are extra special because at the concert, it has become a tradition for them to perform a percussion ensemble piece. After writing my last percussion ensemble piece, my good friend and the college intern for the percussion section, Hwanee Pak, asked me to write their percussion ensemble piece for the concert. While writing the piece, I found myself staring out my window a lot for inspiration. In my backyard is a large wooded area and a creek where the trees stretch up tall. In this piece I really tried to capture the experience of getting lost in watching those TREELINES. I add some cool sparkly, shimmering effects in the crotales and triangles to make it feel like porch chimes, wind blowing, and the leaves rustling.
This piece was commissioned by Hwanee Pak for the Ellicott City Summer Band Camp Percussion Ensemble.
