We Chase the Sun is a Percussion Trio with Piano.
On the surface, We Chase the Sun was meant to be a metaphor between human behavior and birds migrating. In the 50s, Gustav Kramer, a German zoologist, discovered the “Sun Compas” of birds, discovering that the sun plays a crucial role in some species of birds' navigation skills. I found the idea of a bird “chasing” the sun to be quite poetic.
This ties into the human behavior aspect with the more poetic meaning of sun chasing; the idea of chasing something unattainable, yet it feels right in front of us. And yet, we find the most meaningful lessons and self-actualization when our sun has set.
The piece can be broken up into 3 parts: The beginning starts very lively, as we feel purpose in the chase; the middle section presents itself as a sudden juxtaposition to its previous, with a drop in energy and aleatoric soundscapes, representing the night and self-reflection; and the final section presents recapitulation from the primary with a realized resolution of change and a new direction, representing the idea of self-actualization.
